The Tech Talk | Ep 1: MACRO wisdom from the Microsoft Duo | Microsoft | ASCE | IIEST, Shibpur.

HELLO THERE! So glad that you joined us in our journey to build a wonderful future. Now that you’re here, let us tell you a little about what we are doing. TTT is an initiative by the Academic Society of Computer Engineers (ASCE) to bring to you all the journeys and the knowledge of some wonderful our seniors who have reached places where a lot of us want to see ourselves in the coming years. Our aim is to equip everyone with the necessary knowledge to be able to carve out a niche for themselves in the increasingly demanding global workplace. Through a series of sessions, we will bring to you, stories of people who: • Are now in some of the top PRODUCT BASED COMPANIES • Have cleared competitions such as GOOGLE SUMMER OF CODE • Those who work/have worked OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY. And more… We hope these sessions are as enlightening for you as they are for us. Given below are the questions, along with the time interval for which when they were discussed, asked in this particular interview with Mr. Ankit Giri and Ms. Maitreyee Gupta both of whom are currently working as Software Development Engineers at Microsoft. [03:04 – 05:40] How does it feel to call yourself a ‘___’ engineer? [05:45 – 09:10] What motivated you to walk down this path? [09:20 – 15:22] Is it different from what you imagined, how is the work? [15:42 – 21:31] Tell us a little about how you started, what did you know back then? What did you learn along the way? [21:58 – 25:00] In hindsight, what are the indispensable skills and knowledge required? [25:00-28:49] Should one focus on the competitive aspect or a question bank like the one LeetCode has? [29:13 – 36:09] Which would you say is more important in our setting, Competitive Coding or focusing on building projects? [36:16 – 37:18] Which resources/platforms did you use? [37:22 – 38:30] How rigorous/regular was your practice? [38:55 – 43:45] Did you have the help of a community? [43:49 – 45:46] How did you leverage the benefits of the community without getting distracted? [49:05 – 51:29] What is the x-factor, the thing absolutely essential to succeed? [51:34 – 52:44] What advice to you have for your juniors (of all levels)? As it was more of a discussion than an interview, some information may overlap between these intervals, which is why we suggest that you watch whole of the talk. You will definitely take something away 😊 General Secretary - Rajreet Sarkar (Team Organiser) Assistant General Secretary - Souvik Sarkar (Technical Management) Treasurer - Shubham (Editing) Host - Samarth Khanna Advertising - Swarnali Mondal and Nishita Chowdhury Video Editing - Abhiroop Mukherjee

HELLO THERE! So glad that you joined us in our journey to build a wonderful future. Now that you’re here, let us tell you a little about what we are doing. And more… We hope these sessions are as enlightening for you as they are for us. This is the third episode of this series, for which we had with us one of the most dedicated seniors we ever got to be around. Virali Vora’s journey has come with her fair share of crests and troughs, and she (now SWE at Google) is a living example of the fact that “nothing is impossible if you work hard enough”. On the way she also got selected into various companies such as Barclays, Deutsche Bank, and Media.net (Directi). We deliberately shaped this session to be a little on the technical side, so that all the people in our audience can “crack the code” (pun intended 😉) to get into their dream job. The following is the list of questions that were asked during the interview along with the corresponding time intervals when they were discussed. 00:52 - What does it feel like to be a called a Google engineer? Could you imagine when you were little that you would be here some day? 02:19 - Was this what you wanted to do from the start? What motivated to work for this? 04:07 - Tell us a little bit about how you started, what did you know back then? What resources did you use to practice? How rigorous was your practice? 7:50 - Would you like to talk about the major challenges you faced on the way? What were some major setbacks for you? 13:05 - What were the things you realized you were doing wrong? What did you change? 18:36 - Considering that you have cleared some really steep interviews, could you tell us a little about the process in various companies? 22:21 - What are the most important things, in your experience, required for cracking top product-based company interviews? 29:28 - Did you also do any projects on the side? What is your opinion on the relevance of projects of all kinds? 31:02 - How is life at Google? Are you satisfied? How do you feel at this point? 37:24 - What are your takeaways from your own journey? Technical knowledge aside, what did you learn? 39:10 - What is your final advice for all the listeners? Your final words of wisdom? As it was more of a discussion than an interview, some information may overlap between these intervals, which is why we suggest that you watch whole of the talk. Through a series of sessions, we will bring to you, stories of people who: • Are now in some of the top PRODUCT BASED COMPANIES • Have cleared competitions such as GOOGLE SUMMER OF CODE • Have chosen a different path of life after college • Those who work/have worked OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY. And more… We hope these sessions are as enlightening for you as they are for us. THIS IS OUR FOURTH SESSION for which we invited Mr. Shashwat Jha and Abhishek Pal who are currently pursuing MBA from XLRI, Jamshedpur. Theirs is a journey that passed in confusion for a long time before which it took a turn that ultimately led them to success. We believe that a lot of us will be able to relate with their story in many ways and can learn a lot from him. Given below are the questions along with the interval when they were discussed. 2:10 – You came to an engineering college with the hope of becoming an engineer and now you are in B-School, so how was the transition? 4:45 – How and when did the thought of MBA come to your mind and when did you start with your preparations? 5:36 – From where did you prepare and how much you gave dedicatedly for this? 8:20 – How did you keep balance between computer science and preparations? Did you face any obstacles in managing? 10:11 – What are the things one can do in college which you think would be helpful in this field? Like Shashwat bhaiya you were involved in many extra-curricular activities like Instruo, so what would you suggest? 12:02 – I am aware that Abhishek bhaiya you had internships in CapG and PWC, also you were involved in Web-D, so the one's who are aiming for MBA should they leave all these CS stuffs and internships and do hardcore preparations ? Or should they manage both? 14:09 – Did academics and past academic records affect your selection? 16:17 - This is a common dilemma of people, whether MBA just after college or after a few years of experience. So, what’s your opinion, will work experience after graduation boost the chances for MBA? 19:06 – How has been your experience of MBA till now? 21:15 - As you guys have already interned , and have got experience in this field, so people usually pursue MBA for the money, but how extracting is the job? Is the job worth the money? 24:10 – And one imp fact that the courses are quite expensive, so what to do regarding this? 26:42 – We all know that, there’s a huge competition out there, and everyone wants to get the best. So didn’t you ever feel that you might not be able to make it. In such a case how did you cope up? 30:12 - What would you say to your fellow juniors who are right now in a dilemma for their future, what to do higher studies or placements? As it was more of a discussion than an interview, some information may overlap between these intervals, which is why we suggest that you watch the whole of the talk. You will definitely take something away 😊 General Secretary - Rajreet Sarkar Assistant General Secretary - Souvik Sarkar Treasurer - Shubham Host - Chitralekha Dutta Advertising - Swarnali Mondal Video Editing - Abhiroop Mukherjee

And more… We hope these sessions are as enlightening for you as they are for us. As the name suggests, the fifth episode of this series addresses a different question. “What is the journey like for people who explore different fields of Computer science? What are the pros and cons of taking the unconventional route?” We had the good fortune of hosting two people who are one those best suited to answer these questions that most of us think about. In this session, we bring to you the experiences of Rupkatha Hira and Himanshu Pandey, who explored the fields of machine learning and web development respectively, among other things. They will tell you all about the pros and cons of choosing such a path. The following are the questions along with the time when they were asked. [2:17] We’ve heard a bit about the nature of work for SDEs. What is your work like, Rupkatha di, being in the R&D department of a company? [3:31] Pandey bhaiyya, how is the experience of working as SDE in a bank? How is it different? What are the pros and cons if any? [4:40] Why did you each decide to work in the fields that you chose, considering that they are not part of the sure shot path to success? What was your motivation? [7:33] What all resources/platforms did you use to hone these skills? What all did you do to build your profile? Udemy and books on Node and React, official docs and reading [11:55] How did that profile ultimately help you; how will it help in the future? Did you think you will be in your current roles, while you were pursuing your interests? [18:08] Rupkatha di, would you like to share with us your experience of going and working abroad? What did you learn there? [22:02] (Rupkatha di) I am aware that you wanted to go abroad to pursue MS. Do you still have that in mind? Were there any reasons for it not to work out right now? [28:02] Pandey bhaiyya, you served as an intern in a startup Bots and Brains at the end of your third year and many wfh projects. How did you get there and what was the experience like? What advice would you give in this context to so many of us looking for internships in our third year (and some for second)? [35:37] You’ve both talked about how many things didn’t work out the way you might have liked. What can be learnt from whatever failures you had along the way? [40:50] Finally, what have you learnt from this unique journey? What are the commandments you would like to hand down to your juniors and all other viewers? As it was more of a discussion than an interview, some information may overlap between these intervals, which is why we suggest that you watch whole of the talk. I guess you are familiar with our goals and methodology by now. If this is the first time you are joining us, we would recommend going through the previous videos and getting a glimpse of what we have learnt so far. Do check the description if you would like to know more about this endeavor. This is our 8th session, for which we were lucky enough to host some of the most popular faces of their time. The specialty of this video is that among all the points of knowledge we get from these two accomplished people, we get to see a contrast between what management is like in India, and abroad. The fact that both are such good friends, served as a catalyst for the discussion. Namit Bhasin is currently pursuing a master’s in management from the ESSEC school of business in Cergy, France. This program is ranked 3rd in the world, in its category. He nailed the GRE exam and is now well versed with the process and aftermath of getting selected to a B-School outside India. Vikram Aditya Sen is now a Post-graduate Program student at IIM Kozhikode, after securing a whopping 99.86 percentile in CAT 2019. He also has one year of work experience, which makes his journey remarkably interesting. He has a lot of practical knowledge to offer, that really opened our minds. This session is for everyone. The ones who are mulling over pursuing management, the ones who want to know about various opportunities that exist (both in India and abroad), and all those people who are interested in learning about knowledge one gains in various fields, though various life experiences. We hope this conversation is as informative, pleasant, and encouraging for you, as it was for us. The following are the questions that were addressed during this discussion, along with the time when they were asked, for ease of navigation: 1) When did you decide that you wanted to do this? What was your motivation to walk down this path? In general, which people should go for this field? [00:03:03] 2) (Namit bhaiya) How and when did you start preparing? What resources did you have? Did you get any guidance? [00:07:50] 3) (Vikram Da) Considering you went for work experience before joining your B-School, how different was the preparation for you? [00:12:20] 4) What work/activities/experiences in college or even after helped you in getting to where you are?[00:20:30] 5) What is the application process like? What are the stages from after the exam to finally getting selected? Apart from the exam, what are the things that top B-Schools look for? [00:22:33] 6) I guess if we are talking about B-Schools we need to address the financing of it all. How do you manage? What are other ways people follow? [00:33:05] 7) Obviously, the journey does not stop here. What is life like for you right now? What kind of effort does one have to put to thrive in and get the benefit out of such environments, upon reaching there? [00:43:13] 8) What are the prospects after your degrees?
